The Department of Geology at the University of Kansas offers fully funded fellowships, scholarships, teaching assistantships (GTA), and research assistantships (GRA) for incoming M.S. and Ph.D. students. Funding covers tuition, fees, and provides a competitive stipend. Students may specialize in areas such as geomicrobiology, hydrogeology, petroleum geology, tectonics, geophysics, structural geology, paleontology, and more.

What is Covered?

  • Department Fellowships & Scholarships: $32,000–$35,000 (includes tuition, fees, and stipend).
  • Guaranteed support: up to 2 years (M.S.) or 4 years (Ph.D.) via fellowships, GTA, or GRA.
  • Self Graduate Fellowship (Ph.D. only):
    • $34,850 annual stipend
    • Full tuition and fees
    • Four years of support
    • Professional development program

Eligibility Criteria

  • Admission to the KU Geology graduate program (M.S. or Ph.D.).
  • Strong academic record and demonstrated research potential.
  • Ph.D. applicants seeking Self Fellowship must show leadership potential and capacity for significant contributions in their field.
  • Application materials submitted by January 15 for Self Graduate Fellowship consideration.

How to Apply?

  1. Apply to the KU Geology Graduate Program via the KU Graduate Admissions portal.
  2. Submit required documents (transcripts, CV, statement of purpose, recommendation letters, English proficiency if international).
  3. All applicants are automatically considered for departmental funding (fellowships, GTA, GRA, scholarships).
  4. Ph.D. applicants interested in the Self Graduate Fellowship should indicate interest and ensure materials are submitted by January 15.
