The Chancellor’s Doctoral Fellowship (CDF) is one of the University of Kansas’ most prestigious awards for exceptional PhD students. Established in 2013 by Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little, the fellowship supports outstanding doctoral scholars who demonstrate academic excellence, research productivity, leadership potential, and the ability to communicate the societal value of their research. Each year, four new fellows join a cohort dedicated to advancing innovation and leadership through research.
Who Can Apply?
- New or first-year PhD students (domestic or international)
- Applicants admitted to a KU doctoral program beginning Fall 2025
- Students from any area of doctoral study at:
- KU Lawrence or Edwards campuses
- KU Medical Center (Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences)
- Students must be enrolled full-time for the duration of the fellowship
What is Covered?
Each Chancellor’s Doctoral Fellow receives a four-year funding package that includes:
- Annual stipend: $35,000 (12-month Graduate Research Assistant appointment)
- Full tuition and fee coverage (approx. $10,000 per year)
- 75% health insurance subsidy
- Total package value: Over $45,000 per year
- Participation in a Mentoring Training Program for professional growth
Fellows cannot hold other GRA/GTA/GA appointments during the fellowship. Exceptions may be made for approved professional development opportunities.

- Be new or first-year doctoral students at KU (starting Fall 2025)
- Be nominated by their department or program
- Demonstrate:
- Academic excellence and research productivity
- Clear leadership vision in their field
