The Cancer Biology PhD program, part of the Interdisciplinary Biological and Health Sciences Consortium (IBHSC), provides cutting-edge training in basic and translational cancer research. Established in 1940 at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research—the first U.S. graduate program in cancer biology—it now includes over 50 faculty trainers across multiple departments. Students gain comprehensive exposure to the biological mechanisms of cancer, from molecular genetics and virology to chemical carcinogenesis, toxicology, and therapy. The program prepares graduates for careers in academia, government, and industry.
