The Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communications at KU is designed to prepare students for advanced research and academic leadership in communication, media, and journalism. The program emphasizes independent research, critical thinking, and teaching experience, with up to six semesters of financial support provided through assistantships and fellowships.

Who Can Apply?

  • Students with a Master’s degree in journalism, mass communications, or related fields (with at least a 3.5 GPA).
  • Exceptional bachelor’s degree holders may be admitted directly into the 46-hour Ph.D. program.
  • International students are welcome (must show proof of English proficiency and financial support).

 What is Covered?

  • Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA):
    • Salary of $24,084 (nine months, paid bi-weekly).
    • 100% tuition waiver for fall and spring semesters.
    • Health insurance (75% of cost covered by KU).
  • Additional Benefits:
    • $1,000 new student award.
    • $1,000 research award in the third year.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Master’s degree with minimum 3.5 GPA (or exceptional bachelor’s applicants).
  • Research and academic writing samples.
  • CV/Resume.
  • 3 letters of recommendation (one from master’s advisor).
  • Survey on research focus area (part of the application).
  • Proof of English proficiency (for non-native speakers).
  • Financial support documents (for international applicants).

  2. Pay nonrefundable application fee.
  3. Submit:
    • Official transcripts (undergraduate + graduate).
    • Research and scholarship samples.
    • Resume/CV.
    • References (3 total).
    • Completed survey on research focus.
  4. Contact program staff (Associate Dean Hyunjin Seo or Coordinator Jammie Johnson) for additional guidance.
