The MEXT Scholarship (Japanese Government Scholarship) is one of the most prestigious funding opportunities for international students. It provides full financial support for Master’s studies in Japan, covering tuition, living, and other major study-related expenses.

Who Can Apply?
International students from MEXT-eligible countries who wish to pursue a Master’s degree in Japan.

What is Covered?

  • Full university tuition fees (for the entire duration of the program)

  • Monthly stipend (amount varies by year)

  • Travel expenses (round-trip airfare to and from Japan)

  • Accommodation and research support (depending on placement)

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be an international student currently living outside Japan

  • Must be a citizen of a country listed as eligible by MEXT

  • Must have at least a 2.30 GPA on a 3.00 scale from the last university attended

  • Cannot be in active military service (soldier or civilian employee)

  • Previous MEXT awardees generally cannot reapply unless three years have passed and they have gained significant new experience (except Monbukagakusho Honours Scholarship holders)

  • Cannot hold another Japanese government or affiliated scholarship at the same time (unless officially approved)

  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Student Visa during the program

How to Apply:

  • Apply via the Japanese Embassy/Consulate in your home country or directly through a partner university in Japan (routes may vary)

  • Submit the required documents: application form, academic transcripts, research/study plan, recommendation letters, proof of GPA, and health certificate

  • Pass a written exam and interview (if shortlisted by the embassy)

  • Successful candidates will be nominated for final selection by MEXT
