The PhD in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering at the University of Kansas equips students to tackle global challenges in water quality, treatment, hydrology, climate impacts, and environmental systems. Students may begin in fall, spring, or summer, and exceptionally qualified candidates may enter directly after a bachelor’s degree through KU’s fast-track PhD option

Who Can Apply?

  • Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in engineering (minimum GPA of 3.0).
  • Holders of a master’s degree in engineering or related fields.
  • Exceptionally qualified bachelor’s degree holders seeking direct entry into the fast-track PhD program.
  • Both U.S. and international students.

What is Covered?

  • Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs) and Teaching Assistantships (GTAs), including:
    • Tuition and fee waivers
    • Salary/stipend (20 hrs/week employment)
    • Health insurance
  • Scholarships and fellowships (e.g., KU’s prestigious Self Graduate Fellowship).

 Eligibility Criteria

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA in previous academic work.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (or closely related field).
  • Pass a doctoral qualifying exam within the first 1–2 years (depending on prior degree).
  • Submission of a Plan of Study in the first semester.
  • Completion of at least 48 credit hours (post-Bachelor’s) or 24 credit hours (post-Master’s) plus 6 hours of research credits.
  • For international students: English proficiency requirements must be met.

  2. Submit required documents (transcripts, CV, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, English proficiency scores if applicable).
  3. No separate application for funding – all admitted students are automatically considered for assistantships, scholarships, and fellowships.
