The Chevening Scholarship is the UK government’s flagship international scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations. It offers exceptional future leaders from Afghanistan the opportunity to pursue a fully funded master’s degree at a UK university, while also joining a global network of leaders driving positive change in fields such as climate action, economic growth, peace, and development.

Who Can Apply?

  • Citizens of Afghanistan (who meet Chevening residency rules).
  • Applicants with a strong academic record and at least 2 years of work experience.
  • Future leaders who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to positive change.
  • Applicants willing to return to Afghanistan (or contribute globally) after completing studies.

What is Covered?

  • Full UK university tuition fees.
  • Monthly stipend to cover living expenses.
  • Travel costs to and from the UK.
  • Arrival allowance and departure allowance.
  • Cost of one UK visa application.
  • Travel grant to attend Chevening events in the UK.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be a citizen of Afghanistan (or another Chevening-eligible country).
  • Hold an undergraduate degree that enables entry into a UK Master’s programme.
  • Have at least two years (2,800 hours) of work experience.
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and secure an unconditional offer from one.
  • Meet Chevening’s English language requirements (if required).
  • Not hold British citizenship or have previously studied in the UK with UK government funding.

How to Apply?

  1. Complete the online application through the official Chevening portal.
  2. Submit required documents: education history, references, and work experience details.
  3. Apply to at least three eligible UK master’s programmes.
  4. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview.
  5. Successful candidates will receive a conditional award, pending university admission and visa approval.
